December 2016 Newsletter

December 1, 2016

Winter is blowing in! The weather is starting to feel more and more like the season. The Holiday Session is in full swing and it's so much fun getting to sing with everyone for the first time in December at A Minor Melody!

There is so much is happening during the Holidays that it can be hard to remember the everyday. The season is a time for giving and helping others but don't forget to take the time to make memories with your family as well. Take time in your busy day and make it a point to spend quality time with those who are closest to you. Sing a song, have a dance off, read a book, and start making some holiday traditions for your little ones to remember and cherish throughout the years.

Let's All Click Our Sticks

The Sticks Collection begins this January and I am very excited to say hello to the collection again. I love that in Music Together we have so many songs to sing but at the same time it can take a while to revisit. Seeing the Sticks Collection circle back is like saying hello to an old friend. Sticks brings us twenty-five new songs and activities that your family will enjoy in class and at home. Your children will love playing follow-the-leader during “Follow me Down to Carlow,” counting the stars while rocking in your arms during “Great Big Stars,” and thinking up favorite treats from Grandma for “Trot to Grandma's House.” In addition to imaginative and engaging weekly classes, your tuition includes materials for you to use at home, online access to the curriculum and support materials on the Family Music Zone, and a family newsletter full of resources and music-making ideas.

Some of the families at A Minor Melody are welcoming back Sticks for the second time around and that may feel like a rerun. Take a minute and think about your child's musical involvement in class the last time Sticks was hosted. Now with all of the musical memories your family has been making throughout the years. Every semester has brought new developments and taught new lessons. Sticks might feel like a rerun, but for you and your child you will be experiencing it in a whole new way! You little one has grown and throughout that growth music has been there every step of the way. You may see that once you were singing Sticks to your child but now he is singing to Sticks with all of us!

When All Else Fails Sing A Song

As a father of two amazing girls I have learned to adapt to the ever changing ideas they come up with. There are days when discovery is everywhere I look and not enough time to jot down all of the milestones they have uncovered. There are also days where we can't find our rhythm and we struggle to find harmony. Keeping myself in a positive mindset has always been my strong point and when that mindset feels as if it is slipping I use music to help keep me balanced.

With the busy lives we have it can be hard to remember that we are learning as much as our children are. Music is such a fun way to learn and take new steps for any age. When the morning comes a song can be sung to greet the day. A simple shuffle to the kitchen to bring out the pots and pans for a jam can change the mood of anyone. Take the time to recognize the simple steps that we take each day and you may find a musical connection in it. I've found that many times my best memories involve culture and a lot of those times there was sound to set the scene.

Music reaches all of us, it's a tool as old as humankind. The next time you're singing to your child watch her facial expressions. When you're at home sing "Ridin' in the Car" with excitement and see how she lights up with wonder. After that sing a completely different tune like "May All Children" and watch her calm down and welcome peace into her heart. As parents we are the role models for our children they do what we do. If they see us only passively enjoying music then they may find it more difficult to enjoy creating and exploring everything music has to offer. It's not always easy and most of us don't really feel like we are supposed to be making music but it's a part of each and every one of us and is important to enjoy it to our best abilities not our expectations! So sing like no one's listening, dance like no one's watching, and share the love of music with everyone around you.
