September 2016 Newsletter

September 1, 2016

Summer has only a few weeks left and then the cool Autumn air will welcome us. This summer A Minor Melody hosted all kinds of fun events. So many amazing projects were painted, colored, and created and we thank you all for coming in to make them memorable. Summer Songs 2 went by so fast! It was a blast trotting around the room and catching crawdads with everyone. There's still so many activities you can do with Summer Songs. It might not be at A Minor Melody anymore, but the music should never end when you walk out our door. Music-making at home is not only fun, but it is also a great way to support language and motor skills. Our world is full of rhythm and sound and here at A Minor Melody we are getting ready to share the Flute Collection with you all.

Flute Is Almost Here

When you join A Minor Melody for Flute you'll learn twenty-five new songs and activities that your family can enjoy in class and at home. Your children will love zooming to the moon like a "Rocketship,' wiggling and clapping to "Shake Those 'Simmons Down," and drumming to the Native American folksong "The Earth Is Our Mother." In addition to imaginative and engaging weekly classes, your tuition includes materials for you to use at home, online access to the curriculum and support materials on the Family Music Zone, and a family newsletter full of resources and music-making ideas. This semester, we will also be celebrating International Day of Peace (September 21st, 2016) with a very special Music Together Around the World party and you are invited!

The Flute Collection begins September 7th and ends on November 16th. Classes are 45 minutes in length once a week. You'll learn all kinds of new activities in class and hopefully will share some ideas you and your children come up with at home. Registration is easy and there's still some space left for you and your family to join in on this musical journey. See our class times below and click here to sign up to Flute today!

Playing Is Learning

Children are born curious of the world. They listen, look, smell, taste, and touch everything! It's how they discover and learn about their surroundings. Sometimes in class our little ones feel the need to taste the egg shakers, which is okay, because that is how discovery begins. What they discover is 1. This doesn't taste like an egg and 2. My shaker isn't making the same sound as the other eggs. Allow your child the chance to experiment with their surroundings; this may even show you a new perspective.

Music-making is accessible to any age, makes learning fun, and supports many different types of learning. If your child is more of a visual learner, then try exaggerating your movements. Show them large beats with scarves or move the whole body to their favorite tune. For those auditory learners, you can show contrast with your voice from quiet to loud or making silly voice sounds like little mice running across a room or a large and very very slow cat. Kinesthetic learners love to use objects, so bring out that instrument basket and let the jamming commence. Of course these are just a few ideas and there are many different ways to implement them in your day to day life. The bottom line is to play! Play with your child using their ideas and you will encourage their imagination to grow.

Open any one of your Music Together songbooks and discover all of the fun activity suggestions provided. The Music Together songbook is a great resource loaded with ideas, illustrations, and melodies for you and your family to enjoy at home or on the road. Remember playing is learning and small steps can make large developmental leaps in young children. Don't be afraid to sing out of key and dance off-beat, just get silly and share the fun with the whole family.

Take the music with you where ever you go with the Hello Everybody! App. This free download includes 8 Music Together favorites and if you sign in with your Family Music Zone account your previous collections will be added automatically to the Hello Everybody! App. Download it today from the App Store or Google Play!
