July 2016 Newsletter

July 7, 2016

July is in the (fire)works! Colors filled the night sky and the beaches are warm and welcoming. The Summer months will be over before we know it!

In June we opened a new creative window at A Minor Melody. We invited families to come in, cool off, and use their imagination. So many stopped by to say hello and spend time making creative memories with their children. It was great meeting new families and spending time with old friends. Drums were built, walls were colored on, paint was splattered, and they were such a hit we have decided to bring them back for the month of July! All events are for ages 18 months - 6 Years old and you are more than welcome to stop by for a little bit and leave when you please. Read below to find out more!

Practice, Practice, Practice!

We've all heard it - the only way to master something is to repeat, repeat, repeat... I've said it before, and I'll say it again: music supports all learning. Learning takes time and it doesn't always "just click." Finding non-conventional ways to help your child learn can offer him a fresh approach to finding solutions. When making music with your child you are helping him develop language skills. When we dance we are fine tuning our motor skills. When we use musical props we learn how to work with others.

Taking the time every day to sing a favorite song with your child will not only bring you two closer together, but it will also help nurture their growing minds. Make a silly dance with your whole body to the beat of the music and watch your little one develop coordination with each step. Make up silly songs for chore time and see the fun your child has when life becomes more animated. Music is your gateway to creativity and imagination and at the same time it is a tool that teaches without even knowing it.

I would love to hear all of the fun musical ideas and games you and your family think up at home, on the road, or in the middle of a grocery store. Share them on A Minor Melody's Facebook page, at our center, or with a simple email. In class ideas are always welcomed and when you share them with the community they will get passed on from family to family like an old story from long ago. Some of my best musical ideas come from making music with children, I learn so much from them. Children aren't afraid to try something different. They welcome exploration and experiment with the world around them. We can all learn from our children if we just take the time to watch, listen, participate, and repeat.

Summer Songs 2 Registration Now Open!

The upcoming Summer Songs 2 Collection features classic Music Together originals like "Ridin' in the Car," plus more traditional favorites, including a fun rendition of the American bluegrass "Crawdad" and our version of the Spanish folksong "Maria Isabel." We'll make the most of the opportunity for vocal-play as we dramatically howl and bark while dramatizing the story of "The Sad Little Puppy." Children will delight in the crescendo that builds to an exuberant "Wheeee!" in family favorite “Allee Galloo.” In addition to your weekly classes, your tuition includes materials for you to use at home, a family newsletter with more at-home music-making ideas, and online access to the songs through the Hello Everybody app. Join us July 9th - August 19th for our 6-week summer session and start making musical memories! Registration is now open for Summer Songs at A Minor Melody. Sign up with a friend this semester and you will both receive $25 off of your registration!
