Hel-lo everybody, we're so glad to see you! The rich music of the Drum Collection has given me many new ideas. I'm excited to share the musical activities I've planned for each class. Do you have a child that loves music at home but doesn't participate in class? You're not alone! Read more below.

Musical Quote

"I think music in itself is healing. It's an explosive expression of humanity. It's something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we're from, everyone loves music."

- Billy Joel

Giving Your Child The Freedom To Explore

As a parent, I know how hard it can be, sitting in class watching my child "not participating." The truth is, children are observers and they each learn things in their own way. For example, I have two beautiful daughters. They love to learn, play, and create all sorts of things. When they were smaller I would take them to a class and they would be almost the opposite of who I thought they were. Katerina would run around and try to attract the attention of the class while Avaline would sit there doing absolutely NOTHING! All I wanted was for them to sit down and participate with the class. No matter how hard I tried they would just keep being the individuals they are.

Wouldn't you know as soon as we got in the car or the moment we walked into the house they would run for their instruments, scarves, and teddys bears and just start making music - from copying what they saw in class, to improvising their own little routine. This just made me more confused. Why wouldn't they participate in class? Why couldn't they just show everyone their unique personalities in the positive ways that they do at home? Why couldn't they be normal like the rest of the kids? The truth is, they were normal, and like every normal person they are unique. I had to sit back and let them be. I participated in class and invited them to make music with me, but no longer tried to make them to sit still and follow directions.

Every child benefits from Music Together in their own way. The more I relaxed and had fun with the class the more they wanted to be a part of it. I modeled the behavior I wanted to see. When they would put on a music session at home I would ask if I could be a part of it and would help by giving positive ideas and silly activities for us to do. As the weeks went by, my little children wanted to play a role in music class more and more. I learned my lesson: I had been too focused on them playing music, rather than on letting them play with music.

Children learn best when they enjoy the subject, and that's why Music Together classes are so great. We teach the fundamentals of music through play, so your child develops a love of not just listening to music, but making music.

I invite you all to let your children play with music and give them the freedom to explore (We do ask that all of the children play safely and be mindful of the others!). The best way to get your child to participate is to let them watch you participating - so play along with us!
